Discover Kilim Furniture in our stunning Showroom
A dive into the unique and interesting pieces that make up our Kilim showroom
What does Kilim mean?
Kilim is a term we use frequently at Jennings Rugs — but what does it mean? Kilim (or Kelim) is a word that is used to describe flat-woven pieces, such as rugs or tapestries.

The benefit of a Kilim rug
Unlike traditional rugs, flatweave Kilim has no pile. Whilst this means the piece will no longer have natural lustre, as some of the natural oil (Lanolin) has been removed, the benefit is that Kilim rugs and runners are two-sided, allowing them to be used on either side without issue, which makes them long-lasting and versatile in your home.
Best uses for Kilims
At Jennings Rugs, we primarily sell new handmade Afghan Kilim pieces in a wide variety of sizes as floor coverings, which are very popular for their diverse designs and colours—a bold statement to any space.
However, there is another use for them: upholstered furnishings. Kilims are versatile and practical; they can be crafted into a wide range of stunning furnishings, from chairs, bar stools, ottomans, cushions and more. We have a fabulous selection of these at Jennings Rugs, made from older Turkish kilims.
Add contemporary flair
Today, Kilim furnishings have become evermore popular in contemporary décor. Their vivid colours and geometric patterns make them versatile statement pieces that can complement a variety of interior styles. Vintage Kilims are increasingly used to upholster everyday furniture pieces, turning them into decorative conversation pieces. They provide a nice contrast to modern-day colour palettes, textures, and patterns, adding vibrancy and interest. Get inspired for your home and peruse our inspiration page.

Why choose Kilims?
There are additional benefits to using these pieces as furnishings.
-
Sustainability: Kilim furnishings are handmade from natural fibres, making them eco-friendly and durable, and serving as an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic textiles.
-
Uniqueness: No two Kilims are exactly alike. Each piece carries its own story, making it a distinctive addition to your home.
-
A Story to Tell: The most charming aspect of Kilims is the symbolism woven into their designs. Each motif carries meaning — love, fertility, protection, or strength — giving your home décor a sense of narrative and soul.
Beautifully crafted by artisans.
Whilst we have been in business for 65 years, our suppliers have been there almost as long, with one of them helping to create the beautiful Kilim furniture you see in our showroom today. What started as small stools, cushions, and draught excluders quickly evolved into unique pieces, including sofas, banquette-style stools, and elegant window seats.
