Afghan Samarkand rugs are hand-knotted carpets that originated in northwest Afghanistan and have a unique design. They are known for their striking colours and a combination of modern and traditional designs. The rugs are influenced by Caucasian design, similar to Kazak pieces.
They sometimes have brightly coloured bobbin-wound fringes and no borders. Samarkand rugs are a relatively new production, first appearing on the market around 2017. The rugs are made of wool pile, cotton warp, and weft and can take months or years to complete, depending on their size and complexity. The labour-intensive process involves intricate designs, meticulous hand-knotting, and the personal touch of skilled weavers
